An Artist's Work Ethic

In the Promotional Frenzy thread overnight there was some controversy over what some called "drama" (referring to a list/schedule of suggested things to do to create more links around the web to increase the odds of increased sales).  There need not be drama if people don't make it into that. It seemed to me it was more the reaction to the semantics than any real drama which then created drama.

If you remember one important point please remember this;

Words are only words. They have no more meaning than we ourselves give them.

This situation I'm writing about is a working example of how fear can become a self-fullfilling prophecy. Reading more into a given interaction than is there causes unecessary stress and wastes valuable time and energy that could be put to better use.

It is important to be able to tell the difference between a challenge and a threat. Some see a challenge and mistake it for a threat.

A challenge is merely a call to action, whereas a threat is some real danger. When you find yourself reacting (over-reacting) to something said in-person or online ask yourself;

1) What other possible meanings might this have besides the one that comes accompanied by this intense fear (or anger)?

2) Is this person really a danger to me?

In such a sudden visceral reaction the "enemy" so to speak is generated within; not coming from without.

In this instance there were some who said they weren't having enough fun and seemed to hyperfocus on the wording of the tasks, that they do them, or that they do them on certain days, and suddenly became myopic as to the  BNR treasuries we recently had, the other treasuries, prizes, other enjoyable activities, and all the late night chatting that had been going on.

This sort of black and white (all or nothing) thinking can keep you stuck and the fear that drives it skews your perception of real events.

It's great to have fun but I really believe we make our own fun and none of us would be artists if we didn't enjoy what we're doing. That same energy can be channeled into creating the lives we want despite external circumstances. That does not happen in one day nor does it happen without our share of headaches.

Realistically I know that unless I only want this art to be a hobby I have to do some things I don't want to do (at least sometimes) to make things blossom, and although as a sole proprietor I have a more flexible schedule than those who work for a company, sometimes I do have to do things at times I don't want to do them also. I discipline myself to do some aspects of my business that are not only "the fun part" so that I can get to the fun part.

There are aspects of my jewelry making I don't always feel like doing and sometimes a custom order might come at an inopportune time when I am least in the mood, but I do it anyway because I know that if I don't then I will not make the money I need due to my own stubbornness and inflexibility. I want to try everything I can to increase my sales so that I can have more and more fun and the freedom that more money provides! If that means biting a few bullets, I'm willing to do that.

When I was a teenager, just as most teens do I didn't want anyone to tell me anything and I wanted to do what I wanted only when I wanted to do it.

But age has made me wiser now. As I matured I began to see things in a different way. Rather than viewing these pieces of advice as just designed to control me I began to look at them from the perspective of "Will this help get me where I want to go?" Then it made sense to me why I was given this or that advice and even if I still didn't want to do certain things I realized at some point that I am responsible for my own actions and lack of actions. I can't reasonably blame somebody else if I decided one day "I don't feel like doing this particular thing" and as a result I didn't reach my goal.

If people get bent out of shape about a guideline then how will they manage when they have to do other things in life that are not negotiable or in which the natural consequences of their laxity will hurt them? ie exercise, lose weight, etc. If you have Diabetes for instance, your doctor might tell you you need to do the above. Or if you have Cancer, that you need to stop smoking. Sure; it is your choice, as there's no law making you do these things, but there's nothing to be gained in getting pissed at the doctor for giving you the advice because it is coming from a correct knowledge of the consequences; both positive and negative.

If an artist isn't open to feedback and for instance doesn't make art that people want to buy they might create pretty things in the abstract but it won't put food on the table. Taking suggestions and making adjustments in your business is not "selling out". It is possible to please your customers and be true to your artistic vision.

Many people start a business with the misconception that because they have no boss they are not accountable. Nothing could be further from the truth. One has to be extra conscientious and extra accountable when one has their own business. We are accountable to our customers, to what's marketable, to follow certain rules and regulations, and accountable to ourselves.

Here's an example; If one of us were to make two art objects and that's all and then said, "I don't feel like making more items because it's not fun" yet got upset because people weren't buying due to not enough choices, then it wouldn't be fair to be outraged that those two things are still sitting there, because we chose not to do what would get us to that next level.

I have met several business coaches and they've all told me that usually in the beginning their clients really hate and are resistant to their suggestions because they are being asked to do things outside their comfort zone. Sometimes they even get really surly. They are being asked to suspend judgment and give something a chance that they have not done that way before. However, in almost all cases when their clients hang in there and give it a chance they come out on the other side really grateful that they didn't say "F" it" when they felt like it when they'd initially felt that it was just too much work.

Any kind of work (if it is to be effective) is a cultivated habit whether you work for yourself or have a 9-5 job.

I realize artists are probably by nature less willing to tolerate following someone else's instructions/suggestions than the general population, but these things are not "laws" and of course we don't "have" to do them, but this isn't a dress rehearsal! We are out here for real; and I'm assuming most of us are here to make a living at our art.

I went out yesterday to take pictures for the suggested blog exercise which was one part of the thread activities. I could have moaned and groaned to myself and said, Oh God do I have to? But I told myself something else instead. It was more like "What can I do with this that's fun and creative? Something I'll enjoy and that others will enjoy." When I got out there and did it...it was fun.

So I guess in a nutshell; the way we perceive what we hear people say or our own perception of a task/activity determines whether we have fun or not. We are all creative people, and creativity is really about thinking outside the box.

Some may see the suggestions that were posted in the forum as words to put them inside a box, but if they are suggestions you aren't used to doing, (or ones you aren't used to doing in that particular way), then to do them actually is outside the box for you.

Seeds of Inspiration

Seed pods from my backyard with their wonderful spikey geometric shape offer interesting design possibilities to artists.

Last night I noted that several people in the Promotional Frenzy thread in the Etsy forum http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=6652194

were talking about the need for refueling their inspiration and motivation, so I slept on it and woke up to the idea today to take pictures of all kinds of textures, lighting, shapes, perspectives, and colors that might jump-start creativity for my own and others' future works.

I found more than enough subject matter just within my front, back, and side yards!

This little wasp's nest was attatched to my screened porch and I placed it on a yellow leaf so that it would stand out better.
There is alot one can do based on this design (and I've seen some fascinating ceramics and jewelry created with this in mind).

For those of you who do steampink styles this drainpipe with its accordian design could pur some new, innovative work!

I've provided several different perspectives that could be incorporated into jewelry, papercraft, ceamic, sculpture, etc.

This folded puppy pen would also offer a unique subject for one's work;

It would make an interesting background for screen printing, as would this screen
Shadows can also offer numerous ideas to artists looking for effects to use in their work.
This is one I captured on my wooden security fence.

Shadows can be really lovely and can be used in all mediums from jewelry to sculpture, to watercolor, to mixed media art.

Here I captured myself taking the picture in the driveway scattered with acorns! Now how about that for perspective!

Jewelry artists and sculptors might especially like this chain link fence cap;

and this hinge might inspire hinges on jewelry or handmade boxes, for instance;

And my favorites are almost always patterns from nature like these!

I love the perspective you get when looking up a tree!

This tree in my backyard has an owl hole near the top where it broke off a few months ago during a storm.

For those of you who love leaves these photos should give you alot to think about!

And for you dog-lovers I've got these;

This dog recently moved into the house behind mine;
 I had to lean over the fence for this first one! Just look at that black tongue on this dog. He must have Chow in him!
And a regal headshot from behind the fence!

I haven't forgotten about all you Carmella fans!

So get out there and see all the beauty this world has to offer, then come back with a headfull of ideas...and create!

Help A Fellow Etsy Seller and Her Dog

Debbie of Debs Crochet has been crocheting for almost 30 years and can crochet almost anything (see the cute penguin in her avatar, for istance).

I was reading and promoting tonight in the Etsy forum and posted in a thread about blogs when I clicked on hers and saw that she is having a health crisis with her dog, Max.

Debbie recently had to put her other dog to sleep because it had terminal cancer. She is very concerned about Max because he needs medical attention but she doesn't have the money to take him to the vet. No other clinic has stepped in to help as of yet. He's whining and rubbing his face and has started losing weight. She thinks there may be something wrong with his teeth.

People have helped Carmella by featuring her story on their blogs, so I thought I'd pay it forward and see what I can do to promote this woman and her dog.

The Fall and Winter is coming so I hope you'll consider purchasing something warm and cozy for yourself or for gifts from one or both of her stores;

Atlanta Man Penalized For Going Green At Home
I've been watching Channel 5 (Fox) News over the past few days and this story just floored me so I had to write about it! Channel 2 and other news agencies have also picked it up,
http://current.com/1brr74c
and it has now also hit the blogosphere!

Steve Miller, a man who lives on Cimarron Drive in Clarkston (a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia) has been cited by Dekalb County Code Enforcement for growing too many vegetables in his home garden. Yes you heard that right!

Apparently he'd been growing these vegetables for years and nobody had a problem with it, and he has even given away some of what he grows to friends and neighbors, and sold some to local Farmer's Markets. Now all of a sudden some unknown neighbor reported him to the county Code Enforcement Office and he now finds himself being charged about $5,000 in fines, although he has since gotten the proper zoning for his property. Most of his neighbors support him and feel the county is misguided and should be helping him rather than attacking him.

The bone of contention Dekalb County is hinging their charges on seems to be the financial aspect of the situation rather than just the number of vegetable plants he has.

During the time that Miller got his property rezoned the charges had been put on hold, but afterwards the county proceeded with their prosecution of the old charges using the excuse that he was in viloation before the rezoning. He's received 8 citations since January, and estimates all this will cost him $27,000-$30,000 before it's settled.

Citations claim among other charges that the workers he hired to help maintain the garden aren't "properly licensed".

Interestingly County officials refuse to talk about the case citing that it is still pending; slated to be heard in Recorder's Court later this month.

Miller's attorney, Doug Dillard says, “It should go away. I think it borders on harassment,” and I agree! This man hasn't hurt or endangered anyone, in fact he is doing something really good for the environment. In keeping with the concept of moving back towards a greener lifestyle I would personally rather buy my produce from small local operations that use less toxic pesticides, don't genetically engineer their crops, and have more direct contact with them and control over how they're managed from seed to table.

In the current difficult economy alot of people are using creative ways to make extra money, and if someone can do that in a way that also helps others and is eco-friendly society should support them!

If Counties are coming up with desperate and bogus ways to make money by piggybacking off innocent citizens and invading their private homes then that's just wrong and maybe instead those officials innitiating such frivolous cases should be investigated and prosecuted!

I have to wonder; who on earth wrote such an idiotic law anyway, and why do they care? It seems to be a sign of the times that when somebody does something particularly creative and different as a way of adapting somebody wants to knock them down and profit off their misfortune to boot! Whatever happened to "Life, liberty, and the persuit of happiness" afforded all Americans in the US Constitution? Steve Miller was only doing what he loves, and he was making lots of others happy around him by sharing his goods with those who would appreciate them.

I hope this man gets everything restored and then some! He not only should get to grow and sell his crops but really should get paid punitive damages from the county for malicious prosecution.

Indian on the Warpath to Change Discriminatory Health Insurance Restrictions
My fight to have my Benicar full dosage covered by my Medicare Part D plan (which is managed by United Healthcare) continues. It's been about 4 years that they've been stonwalling and dodging, and out and out refusing my various levels of appeal, and it took them an entire month to respond to my last appeal.

To put it mildly they have tried every possible trick in the book to stall me and my doctor and screw us around.

Those readers who have read my segments on the horrendous acts of many of the major name health insurance companies may remember that United Healthcare was one that had a track record of denying crucial claims.

Medicare made a huge mistake by privatizing their Part D which deals with medications for the elderly and disabled.

Well the letter I finally received from United Healthcare today had me on the warpath. The upshot of it was that I would have to start from scratch and have my doctor initiate the whole appeal process through United Healthcare again before going back to the point I'd reached after several years (which is the final appeal to an outside company called Maximus).

That ship has sailed and my doctor quit doing this on my behalf about a year ago because he was tired of being given the runaround and having them tell his staff they didn't receive his numerous faxes.

Then I received a phone message from United Healthcare (another department), called the woman back, a prepresentative who only identified herself as Ashley F. I read the letter to her and told her that the way they worded it made it sound as if my doctor didn't do what he was supposed to do and that they said he "cited that it was not FDA approved" for my disease, to make it appear as if he himself didn't support my staying on the drug at that dosage. They failed to say that my doctor had sent them alot of information supporting why I could not take the other drugs they had on their formulary, and that he actually sent them research supporting why this drug at this dosage is safe and effective for Sarcoidosis. They were trying to insist that he do this all over again!

Ashley F. then gave me another fax number directly to Maximus and said I should just send a letter to them telling them also that I'd already done all the appealing I could through Uinited Healthcare.

I am still recovering from the flu but will be doing that soon. Now that Carmella is stable I can start putting more time into this, and they'll find out that they have messed with the wrong patient because I don't give up!

The other night when I called the Medicare 800 number, the representative I spoke with checked over 15 other Part D plans and found that literally none of them covered 40 mg. of Benicar 3 times a day! If I can get this changed I think it will help many others too who are on cutting edge treatments that are off-label or new medications. The concept is very simply; if it helps, and it's safe, then the patient should be able to get it.

Why are conservatives griping about government intervention in healthcare, and not about big business sticking it's nose into it??? These are private companies that are denying people medications they badly need to relieve suffering, and often to stay alive for a full lifespan!

Since the time I started on this particular protocol the number of people benefitting with a variety of autoimmune diseases has multiplied about 4 times (and that's just what is counted on the official research site). There are many others quietly on the protocol through their own local physicians who are not part of the online research cohort, many of whom probably are running into the same problem. If they have a fair amount of money they can afford to buy the medication out of pocket, but if not they may have to resort to getting it from third world countries, or they may be unable to get it at all.

I just recently heard that one of the other protocol drugs, Zithromax has stopped being covered by my plan and by most of the others except those with the most expensive premiums.

Yes, they're perfectly willing to cover medications that will reactivate deadly infections and possibly kill me, and anti-cancer drugs that can totally dismantle my entire immune system and open me up to new and deadly infections, but they can't see fit to allow coverage of some simple antibiotics and a medication usually used to treat high blood pressure with a very low risk of side-effects to which I had none at all for 3 some years!

I guess they think that it's less expensive to pay for the doctor's appointments and tests that become necessary when my various organs start malfunctioning several times a year during an acute exascerbation than it would cost them to cover a few more Benicar a day to prevent that...Oh, I forgot...that would be Medicare itself covering all their consequences for not paying for my medication at therapeutic doses. I guess they figure they'll let that be the government's problem! They (meaning United Healthcare) don't pay for that part!

Luckily I have not had to be hospitalized, at least not yet, but I think the last one came pretty close to it. I just hate going to the ER and I probably should have when I had the cardiac and respiratory symptoms but to be honest I didn't have the energy to get out of bed for several weeks. Living alone I really didn't have somebody to go with me anyhow and bring me back home. It was hard enough to drag myself to the GP and the heart specialist via the medical transportation system that had to be set up with three days notice.

I can imagine how many others these insurance companies are making jump through these hoops, and although the National healthcare bill has passed, in its watered-down form it's hard to know how much, how completely, and how soon we'll be protected from such denial tactics.

I would love to speak before Congress about this and I may see if I can set that up. It's getting about time for me to write President Obama again. This seriously needs to be changed. If Maximus is a private company too then I will need all the clout behind me I can get.

30 Minutes of Fame-A Clever Way of Marketing Art-based Businesses Online

If you don't know what 30 Minutes of Fame refers to check out this Etsy forum thread!
http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=6585117&page=1

In a nutshell, this is how it works; for 30 minutes one Etsy shop is promoted intensively by the participants in the thread. That lucky shop gets links posted in the thread, on twitter, facebook, blogs, and/or other places for that half-hour, and hopefully sales! The "famous" person is chosen by landing on certain number posts in the thread and then scgedules the time and date they would like within a 72 hour period of winning.

Tonight we have two scheduled, and any and all readers are invited to attend and share in the fun!
